Massachusetts Moms Demand Action, Everytown Respond to Mass Shooting in Abington

October 7, 2019

ABINGTON, Mass. — The Massachusetts chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, part of Everytown for Gun Safety, released the following statement in response to reports that five people were found shot and killed, including the shooter who died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. All victims were members of one family and initial reports indicate the deaths to be a result of a murder-suicide.

“Our hearts go out to the Abington community after news of this tragic shooting,” said Rina Schneur, a volunteer with Massachusetts chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America. “Details are still emerging, but it’s likely these deaths were spurred by domestic violence. We need to do everything possible to protect Massachusetts families from gun violence.”

Most mass shootings in the US are related to domestic or family violence. October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic violence, call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233, available 24/7, for confidential assistance from a trained advocate.

Everytown defines mass shootings as those in which four or more people are shot and killed, excluding the shooter. Every day in the U.S. on average, 100 Americans are killed with guns, and hundreds more are shot and wounded.
