PAINTSVILLE, Ky – The Kentucky chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, part of Everytown for Gun Safety, today issued the following statement in response to reports of a mass shooting at two different homes Saturday afternoon in Johnson County.

While details are a still unfolding, reports indicate that at least four people were shot and killed in two different locations before the gunman shot and killed himself.

Research by Everytown for Gun Safety shows that this is at least the 181st mass shooting since January 2009, and the third mass shooting this year. Everytown’s analysis of mass shootings from 2009 to 2016 is available here.

Everytown defines a mass shooting as an incident in which four or more people, not including the shooter, are killed with a firearm.

STATEMENT FROM CONNIE COARTNEY, VOLUNTEER CHAPTER LEADER WITH THE KENTUCKY CHAPTER OF MOMS DEMAND ACTION FOR GUN SENSE IN AMERICA:

“It seems like every weekend we wake up to the news of another horrible shooting. Just last month, two children were killed in a school shooting in Marshall County, and now gun violence has struck the Bluegrass State again, killing four. We cannot allow this kind of violence to become normal. As we pray for the victims’ families and friends, we can and should do more to keep guns out of the hands of people with dangerous histories. Lives are on the line.”
