Pennsylvania Moms Demand Action, Everytown Denounce State Senate’s Passage Of Bill That Would Allow Guns Into Pennsylvania Schools

June 29, 2017

SB 383 Would Allow School Districts to Let Staff Carry Guns in Pennsylvania K-12 Schools

HARRISBURG, Pa. – The Pennsylvania chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, part of Everytown for Gun Safety, today denounced state senators for passing Senate Bill 383. If eventually signed into law, the bill would allow school districts to let educators and other school staff carry firearms anywhere in school buildings. It passed by a vote of 28-22 and now heads to the House of Representatives.

STATEMENT FROM DEB MARTESLO, VOLUNTEER CHAPTER LEADER WITH THE PENNSYLVANIA CHAPTER OF MOMS DEMAND ACTION FOR GUN SENSE IN AMERICA:

“The state senators that voted for this bill should be ashamed of themselves. Educators across Pennsylvania have been calling, emailing and showing up to the capitol to urge senators to oppose SB 383.The only people who should be armed in our schools are highly trained members of our law enforcement community or other security professionals. As a longtime educator in Orwigsburg and Camp Hill, I know that the overwhelming majority of my colleagues are opposed to this bill. Instead of heeding the advice of those of us in classrooms, however, state senators have sided with the national gun lobby. Their recklessness will only increase the likelihood of unintentional shootings in our school buildings. I vow to continue working as hard as possible to make sure this bill does not become law, and I know that the thousands of Moms Demand Action supporters across the state will do the same.”
