Senate Bill 719 Will Allow Courts to Temporarily Prohibit a Person from Having a Gun if Law Enforcement or Immediate Family Members Show That He or She Poses a Danger to Self or Others
SALEM, Ore. – The Oregon chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, a part of Everytown for Gun Safety, today applauded Governor Kate Brown for signing Senate Bill 719, an Extreme Risk Protection Order bill that will allow courts to temporarily prohibit a person from having a gun if law enforcement or immediate family members show that he or she poses a danger to self or others.
According to Everytown research, in nearly half of mass shootings in the United States from 2009-2016, the shooter exhibited warning signs prior to the shooting indicating that they posed a danger to themselves or others. These red flags included acts, attempted acts, or threats of violence towards oneself or others; violations of protective orders; or evidence of ongoing substance abuse.
STATEMENT FROM LISA REYNOLDS, VOLUNTEER WITH THE OREGON CHAPTER OF MOMS DEMAND ACTION FOR GUN SENSE IN AMERICA:
“Governor Kate Brown is a long-time gun sense champion and we are proud that she signed Oregon’s Extreme Risk Protection Order legislation. SB 719 is a common sense bill that will empower families and law enforcement officers to take action to potentially prevent tragedies before they happen. That law will help save lives. While this bill is a step forward for gun sense in Oregon, there are still specific steps we can take to reduce senseless gun violence in Oregon. We look forward to the legislature addressing those policies in 2018.”
