House Bill 233 Would Allow People to Carry Hidden, Loaded Handguns in Ohio Schools, College Campuses, Bars While Drinking Alcohol, and Even on Private Property Where “No Guns Allowed” Signs Are Posted
Volunteers with the Ohio Chapter of Moms Demand Action Have Driven More Than 1,000 Letters and More Than 250 Calls Voicing Opposition to HB 233
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, part of Everytown for Gun Safety, today criticized state representatives for passing House Bill 233. It now heads to the Senate.
HB 233 would allow people to carry hidden, loaded handguns in schools and on college campuses, in bars while drinking alcohol and even on private property where “No Guns Allowed” signs are posted. Yesterday, the Ohio Chapter of Moms Demand Action joined several other groups including the Ohio Chamber of Commerce, the Ohio Coalition of Battered Women, the Ohio Coalition Against Gun Violence and the Ohio Restaurant Association, in testifying against HB 233.
STATEMENT FROM MAUREEN WASHOCK, VOLUNTEER CHAPTER LEADER WITH THE OHIO CHAPTER OF MOMS DEMAND ACTION FOR GUN SENSE IN AMERICA:
“The state representatives that voted for this bill should be ashamed of themselves. This legislation would undermine private property rights by allowing people to bring hidden, loaded handguns onto private property – even if the owner has posted a no-guns-allowed sign. It would also allow people to carry guns in schools, on college campuses and in bars while drinking alcohol. Gun violence is a deadly problem that kills more than 90 Americans every day and injures hundreds more and we should be doing everything we can to reduce it – not passing bills that would put more guns in more places. Ohio Moms Demand Action volunteers and gun safety advocates across the state will urge our lawmakers in the Senate to reject this dangerous bill and protect our safety.”
