Gun Safety Advocates and Champions Celebrate 10 Years of Moms Demand Action, and Call on Lawmakers to Strengthen Missouri’s Gun Laws

Advocacy Day Coincided With Federal Court Ruling Striking Down Missouri’s Dangerous Nullification Bill or ‘Second Amendment Preservation Act’ Today

Jefferson City, Mo. — Yesterday, over 150 Missouri Moms Demand Action and Students Demand Action volunteers, alongside Everytown for Gun Safety’s Managing Director of Volunteer Leadership and Engagement Kenneth Gonzales called for action on gun safety during their annual advocacy day in Jefferson City. This year’s advocacy day also celebrates 10 years of Moms Demand Action’s life-saving work to protect families and communities from gun violence.

“We showed up to make it clear to lawmakers we will not back down in our fight for gun violence prevention and against the gun lobby’s ‘guns everywhere agenda,’” said Niadu Allen, fellow with the Everytown Survivor Network and a volunteer with the Missouri chapter of Moms Demand Action. “While our politicians play political games, we will just continue to grow louder and stronger. It’s time our lawmakers did their jobs and work to protect Missourian lives — and we will be there mobilizing and demanding accountability every step of the way.”

Lawmakers have put Missouri lives in jeopardy by repealing basic gun safety measures over recent legislative sessions and passing dangerous measures that weaken the state’s gun laws. During the 2023 legislative session, lawmakers must show up for their constituents and reject dangerous bills that would expand the ‘guns everywhere’ agenda, would expand stand your ground or “Shoot First” laws, and would expand the state’s existing nullification law. Moreover, state leaders should focus on passing bills like SB 894 that would aim to protect survivors of intimate partner violence from gun violence by preventing domestic abusers from having guns.

While the Missouri legislature continues to push their ‘gun everywhere’ agenda, today, in a major win for gun safety and significant setback for the “constitutional sheriffs” movement and gun lobby agenda to undermine federal gun laws, a Federal Court has struck down Missouri’s dangerous “Second Amendment Preservation Act”  — Missouri’s existing nullification law.
