Everytown Releases “Lil’ Wayne (LaPierres)” Video Ahead of NRA Annual Meeting

April 7, 2015

Video Features Young Children Reciting Some of Wayne Lapierre’s Most Fear-Inducing Rhetoric

Everytown and Moms Demand Action Will Be in Nashville This Week to Counter NRA’s Dangerous Agenda, Rally for Safer Gun Laws that Overwhelming Majority of Americans Support

As the National Rifle Association prepares for its Annual Meeting in Nashville later this week, Everytown for Gun Safety today released a new video called “Lil’ Wayne (LaPierre’s).” The video features children reading, verbatim, the ways that NRA Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre uses fear and paranoia to advance the NRA’s extreme agenda. You can watch it here.

Some of Mr. LaPierre’s statements voiced by children in the video include:

  • “If I can borrow from Mr. Churchill, we have nothing to fear but the absence of fear.” NRA Annual Meeting, April 1996.
  • “They’re out to brainwash your kids and change your life, no matter how many millions of humans end up dying in the process.” CPAC, February 2007.
  • “We know, in the world that surrounds us, there are terrorists, and home invaders and drug cartels and carjackers and knockout gamers, rapers, haters, campus killers, airport killers, shopping mall killers, road-rage killers, and killers who scheme to destroy our country with massive storms of violence against our power grids, or vicious waves of chemicals or disease that could collapse the society that sustains us all.” NRA-ILA Leadership Forum, April 2014.

“The NRA has nothing to sell but fear itself,” said Shannon Watts, the founder of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America. “But the gun lobby is no longer the only voice in the fight. Moms from every state in the country are mobilizing to reject the NRA’s dangerous vision for America, and advocate instead for safer gun laws that will protect our children and our communities from gun violence.”

The NRA continues to advocate for dangerous gun laws despite opposition from the overwhelming majority of Americans—often even the majority of its own members. Ninety percent of Americans and 74 percent of NRA members, for example, support background checks for all gun sales.

Everytown and Moms Demand Action will also be in Nashville to rally against the NRA’s dangerous agenda and speak up for the overwhelming majority of Americans who support common-sense measures like background checks proven to save lives.
