Everytown, Moms Demand Action Statement on Transgender Day of Remembrance

November 20, 2018

At Least 22 Transgender/Non-Gender Conforming Americans Have Been Killed Nationwide This Year; 16 of Whom Have Been Shot and Killed

NEW YORK — Everytown for Gun Safety and Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, a part of Everytown, today released the following statement in observance of Transgender Day of Remembrance, an annual day dedicated to honoring the memory of those killed in acts of anti-transgender bigotry and violence.

At least 22 transgender or gender non-conforming people have been killed nationwide so far this year. Everytown for Gun Safety has found that at least 16 of the victims were killed with guns, and about 90 percent of all the victims were women of color.

STATEMENT FROM SHANNON WATTS, FOUNDER OF MOMS DEMAND ACTION FOR GUN SENSE IN AMERICA:

“Moms Demand Action volunteers across the country stand in solidarity with the transgender community. So far this year, at least 22 trans Americans have been killed in acts of bigotry and violence. These senseless deaths remind us just how deadly the mix of transphobia and easy access to guns can be – particularly for Black women. We owe it to Shantee Tucker, Celine Walker, Dejanay Stanton – and the countless others whose names we’ll never know – to fight to disarm hate in America.”
