Everytown, Moms Demand Action Statement in Response to Quinnipiac Polling on Gun Safety After Parkland, Florida Mass Shooting

February 21, 2018

97 Percent of Voters Support Background Checks on All Gun Sales — the Highest Level of Support Since Quinnipiac Began Polling the Question After Sandy Hook

WASHINGTON
– Everytown for Gun Safety and Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, a part of Everytown for Gun Safety, released the following statement in response to new polling by Quinnipiac that shows the “the highest level of support” for stronger gun laws “ever measured by the independent Quinnipiac University National Poll.”

Key poll findings include:

  • 97 percent of voters support background checks on all gun sales (including 97 percent of gun owners, and 97 percent of Republicans);
  • 66 percent of voters support stronger gun laws, the “highest level of support ever” measured by the independent Quinnipiac University National Poll;
  • 67 percent of voters say it is too easy to buy a gun in the U.S. today; and
  • 75 percent of voters say Congress needs to do more to reduce gun violence.

STATEMENT FROM JOHN FEINBLATT, PRESIDENT OF EVERYTOWN FOR GUN SAFETY:

“Americans across the country, including students, educators, mothers and fathers are standing up to demand stronger, not weaker, gun laws. It should be simple — there is near unanimous support among voters for requiring criminal background checks on every gun sale. It polls better than apple pie. But too many of our leaders aren’t reflecting the will of the people, and if they continue to sit on their hands, then voters will throw them out.”

STATEMENT FROM SHANNON WATTS, FOUNDER OF MOMS DEMAND ACTION FOR GUN SENSE IN AMERICA, PART OF EVERYTOWN FOR GUN SAFETY:

“This support isn’t something new – Americans have been clamoring for stronger gun laws for years, but it’s our elected leaders are too often standing in the way. If lawmakers refuse to do what’s right, we’ll throw them out.”
