Delaware Moms Demand Actions, Everytown Applaud Legislature for Passing Gun Violence Prevention Policies This Session

July 2, 2018

HB 222 Created a Red Flag Law That Empowers Delawareans to Help Prevent Firearm Suicides and Mass Shootings

Delaware Became the Ninth State to Prohibit Bump Stocks After Las Vegas

DOVER, Del. – The Delaware chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, part of Everytown for Gun Safety, today marked the end of Delaware’s legislative session by celebrating the passage of gun violence prevention policies this year. This session, lawmakers passed bills to create a Red Flag Law and prohibit bump stocks.

Delaware’s new Red Flag Law will empower local law enforcement and families to seek a Lethal Violence Protection Order (LVPO). An LVPO is a court order that temporarily restricts a person’s access to firearms when they pose a risk of harming themselves or others. This legislation is immensely popular in Delaware. Polling showed an overwhelming 91 percent of Delawareans, including 81 percent of gun owners, support Red Flag legislation.

Additionally, 78 percent of Delawareans support prohibiting the sale and possession of bump stocks, a gun accessory that allows a semi-automatic rifle to mimic the firing speed of a fully automatic firearm. The bump stock prohibition will stop an end-run around federal law by prohibiting bump stocks and other dangerous devices that effectively convert semi-automatic firearms into machine guns.

STATEMENT FROM SARAH STOWENS, VOLUNTEER LEADER WITH THE DELAWARE CHAPTER OF MOMS DEMAND ACTION FOR GUN SENSE IN AMERICA:

“We are so proud of our lawmakers for championing crucial gun safety bills this session and of Gov. Carney for swiftly signing these bills into law. Making bump stocks illegal and creating a Red Flag Law were much needed public safety protections. We look forward to working with lawmakers next session on additional gun sense policies that will help keep our communities safe.”
