California Moms Demand Action, Everytown Applaud Assembly Passage of Resolution Opposing Reckless ‘Concealed Carry Reciprocity’ Legislation; Urge Senate to Vote ‘Yes’

September 12, 2017

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The California chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, part of Everytown for Gun Safety, today applauded the Assembly for passing a resolution to oppose federal “Concealed Carry Reciprocity” (S. 446 and H.R. 38) – the NRA’s top legislative priority.

The resolution, authored by Assemblymember Miguel Santiago, details how “Concealed Carry Reciprocity” legislation would gut California’s laws by forcing California to allow “people with no firearm safety training, people with dangerous histories, people with violent misdemeanor records, convicted stalkers, and abusive boyfriends – to carry concealed handguns on the streets of its towns and cities.” Every state has different concealed carry standards and this legislation forces each state to accept the standards of every other state.

Both the California Chiefs of Police Association and the California Sheriffs Association have announced their opposition to “Concealed Carry Reciprocity.”

STATEMENT FROM SARA MOONEY, VOLUNTEER WITH THE CALIFORNIA CHAPTER OF MOMS DEMAND ACTION FOR GUN SENSE IN AMERICA:

“I’m proud of the California Assembly’s decision today to oppose national ‘Concealed Carry Reciprocity,’ legislation that would not create a national standard for who can carry a hidden, loaded handgun but instead would completely gut California’s gun laws. This reckless legislation is the NRA’s longtime top policy priority and it would force states like California to accept the concealed carry standards of every other state, no matter how weak, or even nonexistent, another state’s standards may be. It would also strip the power from our local and state police to set public safety standards for who may carry a hidden, loaded weapon. For example, California requires safety training to obtain a concealed carry permit but 19 other states allow concealed carry by people who have never had any safety training whatsoever – and those people would legally be able to carry a gun in California. I applaud Assemblymember Santiago’s leadership on gun safety and I urge the Senate to pass this resolution with urgency.”
