Moms Demand Action, Students Demand Action Applaud Weaver for joining Mayor Against Illegal Guns Following Mass Shooting in Boulder
BOULDER, Colo. — In an effort to combat senseless gun violence in Boulder, Colorado and across the U.S., Mayor Sam Weaver has joined Mayors Against Illegal Guns (MAIG), the national coalition of more than 1,000 current and former mayors committed to ending gun violence. The Colorado chapters of Moms Demand Action and Students Demand Action, both a part of Everytown for Gun Safety’s grassroots network, today applauded Mayor Weaver for joining MAIG following the mass shooting in Boulder that killed 10 people at a King Soopers Grocery store.
Members of Mayors Against Illegal Guns are committed to protecting their communities by keeping illegal guns off their streets and out of their schools. These leaders implement and advocate for life-saving gun safety reforms from local programs and municipal ordinances to local, state, and federal legislation.
While their backgrounds may differ, they speak with one voice – united against gun violence for the sake of public safety.
“The people of Boulder are still grieving the 10 lives taken from us suddenly and violently last month by needless gun violence. While the recent mass killings in our community, Atlanta, and now Indianapolis make the headlines, many other victims of gun violence are known only to their loved ones and friends,” said Boulder Mayor Sam Weaver. “That’s why I’m proud to join Mayors Against Illegal Guns in their fight to end this uniquely American public health epidemic. My constituents deserve to feel safe at the grocery store, at school, at work, in their neighborhoods — and I’ll work hard to ensure they do.”
“Our community has been forever rocked by the senseless gun violence that took 10 lives at King Soopers last month but Mayor Weaver has been by our side in mourning and joined us as we channel our grief into action,” said Nicole Liabraaten, volunteer with the Colorado Moms Demand Action. “We are thrilled to see him become a member of Mayors Against Illegal Guns and join the ranks of gun sense mayors across the nation.”

Together with mayors across the country, Mayor Weaver will work to find innovative new ways to advance the following principles:
- Advance enforcement strategies that ensure public safety for residents in communities disproportionately affected by gun violence.
- Advocate for gun safety legislation at the local, state, and federal level.
- Collect data to better understand gun violence in our communities.
- Advance policies that reduce firearm suicides.
- Invest in victim services and neighborhood-level violence intervention programs.
- Implement comprehensive tracing of crime guns.
- Implement strategies to minimize shootings by police.
- Use the courts to advance gun safety.
- Use purchasing power to improve gun safety.
- Invite other cities to join us in this effort.
