Arizona Moms Demand Action, Everytown Applaud Defeat of Dangerous Legislation That Would Have Allowed Loaded Guns in School Parking Lots

April 11, 2019

PHOENIX — The Arizona chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, part of Everytown for Gun Safety, today applauded the Arizona Senate for voting down a bill that would have allowed loaded guns in public school parking lots, HB 2693.

“I’m glad that legislators stood on the side of common sense today by defeating this dangerous bill,” said Geneva Haber, a volunteer with the Arizona chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America. “I’m proud of my fellow volunteers who spoke out against this bill and I’m grateful that our legislators listened to us when we said we shouldn’t have to worry about loaded guns on school grounds when we send our kids off to school.”

Under Arizona law, guns in cars in school parking lots must be unloaded and hidden. This policy is a strong public safety measure that is aimed at keeping Arizona students, teachers and administrators safe. There are legitimate public safety concerns that drive schools to prohibit loaded firearms from being stored on their property, including the risk of guns being stolen from cars. Research also suggests that nearly one-quarter of all stolen guns are stolen from cars and other vehicles.
