NRA Convention Starts on Friday; New Polling Finds An Overwhelming Majority of Hoosiers Want Stronger Gun Laws like Background Checks on All Gun Sales and Red Flag Laws

NEW YORK – Today, Everytown for Gun Safety Action Fund released new polling, which finds that the overwhelming majority of Hoosiers support stronger gun laws, including background checks and Red Flag laws. Significantly, 56 percent of Hoosiers think gun laws should be made stronger, compared to just 8 percent who want weaker gun laws. Support for individual gun safety laws was even higher.

“If NRA leaders thought Hoosiers would welcome their annual convention with open arms, this poll shows they were wrong — the majority of Indiana gun owners want stronger gun safety laws,” said John Feinblatt, president of Everytown for Gun Safety. “Wherever the NRA goes, it is confronted with a simple fact: A growing number of Americans in red, blue and purple states alike want nothing to do with the NRA’s ‘guns everywhere’ agenda.”

“This polling proves that the NRA’s leaders are out of touch with mainstream American voters who, regardless of their political affiliation, know gun safety isn’t a right or left issue, but a matter of life and death,” said Shannon Watts, founder of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America. “As a former Hoosier, I saw firsthand the statewide support for common-sense gun laws. It’s Indiana lawmakers who need to pay attention to this polling and vote accordingly.”

Key poll findings include:

  • 56 percent of Hoosiers think gun laws should be made stronger, compared to just 8 percent who want weaker gun laws.
  • 90 percent of Hoosiers support requiring a background check on every gun sale.
  • 86 percent of Hoosiers support a federal Red Flag law similar to Indiana’s Red Flag law.
  • As the NRA opposes reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act in Congress because it would prohibit abusive dating partners and stalkers from buying guns, 85 percent of Hoosiers support prohibiting domestic abusers, including abusive dating partners and stalkers, from buying guns.
  • Hoosiers would be 60 percent more likely to support candidates for elected office who support background checks on every gun sale and Red Flags legislation.
