West Virginia Moms Demand Action, Students Demand Action, Everytown Applaud Defeat of Dangerous Guns on Campus Legislation

March 10, 2019

HB 2519 Would Have Forced Public Colleges and Universities in West Virginia to Allow Guns on Campuses

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The West Virginia chapters of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America and Students Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, parts of Everytown for Gun Safety, marked the recent end of West Virginia’s state legislative session by applauding the defeat of HB 2519. This dangerous bill would have forced West Virginia’s public colleges to allow people to carry hidden, loaded firearms in sensitive places on campuses.

“As an instructor who works on a college campus and advises freshmen, this is a huge relief,” said Kathie Reilly, volunteer with the West Virginia chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America. “Lawmakers finally put the interests and safety of their constituents above the demands of the gun lobby. We know there is more work to be done in West Virginia, and we will continue to fight for the safety of our families and communities next session.”

“I am so proud of my university community and all the university communities in West Virginia for fighting back and showing that students and teachers know what’s best for our classrooms,” said Anna David Abel, a West Virginia University graduate student and English instructor, and a volunteer with the West Virginia chapter of Students Demand Action. “I am so thankful for the opportunity to continue learning and teaching in an environment that can challenge ideas and encourage difficult conversation without the looming threat of firearms.”
