Virginia Moms Respond to Virginia Delegates Charles D. Poindexter and Chris Head Statements on Shooting in Moneta

ROANOKE, Va.—The Virginia chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, part of Everytown for Gun Safety, today released the following statement from volunteer chapter leader Jennifer Herrera in response to Virginia Delegates Charles D. Poindexter and Chris Head’s reactions to yesterday’s tragedy in which two journalists were killed and another person was injured during a live morning news broadcast. Delegate Poindexter said, “Some will attempt to use this tragedy for politically motivated purposes. Such actions or discussions are inappropriate at this time.” Delegate Head said, “IMHO, to politicize anything about this tragedy today or perhaps even this week is morally wrong. That time will come. Now is not that time.”

STATEMENT FROM JENNIFER HERRERA, VOLUNTEER CHAPTER LEADER – VIRGINIA CHAPTER OF MOMS DEMAND ACTION:

“Delegates Poindexter and Head could not be more wrong. This is exactly the time that we should be talking about how to prevent the gun violence tragedies that kill 88 Americans and injure hundreds more every single day in our country. This is an absolute crisis and it is no time for empty platitudes, which is all that Delegates Poindexter and Head have offered to date. It’s time for action. It’s time for us to stand with Alison’s dad and do — as he said — ‘whatever it takes.’ It’s time for Delegates Poindexter, Head and their colleagues in the Virginia legislature to stop blocking the sensible public safety measures that will keep guns out of dangerous hands and that Virginians and Americans overwhelmingly support. And if they don’t, we will remember that come Election Day this November.”
