Texas Moms Demand Action, Everytown Respond to Shooting That Killed One Police Officer and Injured Another

June 30, 2017

San Antonio Officer Shootings Mark the 106th and 107th Law Enforcement Officials Shot in the Line of Duty in 2017 and the 20th Police Officer Killed by Gun Violence So Far This Year

SAN ANTONIO – Today the Texas chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, part of Everytown for Gun Safety, responded to news that two police officers were shot in San Antonio, Texas on Thursday afternoon while conducting a crime prevention patrol. One officer died earlier this morning, and the other remains in critical condition.

STATEMENT FROM LESLIE GAY BERTOLINO, VOLUNTEER WITH THE TEXAS CHAPTER OF MOMS DEMAND ACTION FOR GUN SENSE IN AMERICA:

“Yesterday, two officers in our community were shot and one has since died. This terrible gun violence is all too common – in fact, these shootings were the 106th and 107th shootings of law enforcement officers in the line of duty this year in America. Our hearts are with the officers’ families during this devastating time. Our officers dedicate their lives to protecting our families and communities. We should not be thanking them, in return, with lax gun laws that leave them so vulnerable to the threat of gun violence. What happened yesterday in San Antonio happens far too often across America. It is time for our lawmakers to stand up and commit themselves to maintaining public safety as a top priority. The future of our state and country are on the line.”
