Everytown For Gun Safety Victory Fund Conducted a Multi-Million Dollar Voter Mobilization Effort in Support Of Representative McBath This Election Cycle
Over Past Three Cycles, Everytown For Gun Safety Action Fund and Victory Fund Have Spent $9 Million to Elect and Re-Elect Representative McBath
Moms Demand Action and Students Demand Action Volunteers Made Over Six Million Voter Contacts to Support Gun Sense Candidates Across the Country
ATLANTA — Everytown for Gun Safety Victory Fund and Everytown for Gun Safety Action Fund, and its grassroots networks, Moms Demand Action and Students Demand Action, declared a major victory today as Georgia voters rejected gun lobby-backed Mark Gonsalves and re-elected Lucy McBath, a former Everytown employee and Moms Demand Action volunteer and gun violence survivor, to the U.S. Congress.
“After living through every parent’s worst nightmare, Representative McBath somehow found the strength to take up the fight to save other Americans from gun violence — and now she’s been elected for the third time,” said John Feinblatt, president of Everytown for Gun Safety. “Lucy is a hero to the entire gun safety movement, and Everytown is incredibly proud to count her as an alumna of our organization and a steadfast partner.”
“Representative McBath has been a steadfast leader in our movement — from her days as a Moms Demand Action volunteer to helping pass the first major gun safety legislation in almost thirty years last Congress,” said Shannon Watts, founder of Moms Demand Action. “Her commitment to this work has made not only the people of Georgia, but all Americans safer. We were so proud to support her during this election and as she continues to fight in Washington with the same tenacity for many years to come, we’ll be right by her side.”
“Representative McBath is a gun sense champion, and we know she will continue the fight to keep Georgians safe in her next term,” said Julvonnia McDowell, a volunteer with the Georgia chapter of Moms Demand Action whose son 14-year-old son, JaJuan, was unintentionally shot and killed by another teen playing with an unsecured gun in 2016. “We are proud to stand alongside her in this victory, and we will support her every step of the way in the fight to end gun violence in Georgia.”
After Everytown endorsed Representative McBath in January, Everytown Victory Fund conducted a multi-million dollar voter mobilization effort in support of Representative McBath during her primary, reaching voters through TV ads, mail, digital, and radio ads all backed by a grassroots army of Moms Demand Action volunteers knocking on doors and making phone calls to voters. Representative McBath, a former employee of Everytown, is a survivor of gun violence, after her son, Jordan Davis, was shot and killed at a gas station in Jacksonville, Florida, in 2012 by a man who thought his music was playing too loud.
Over the past three cycles, Everytown For Gun Safety Action Fund and Victory Fund have spent $9 million to elect and re-elect Representative McBath, ensuring her continued leadership on behalf of survivors and the gun violence prevention movement. When she decided to run for Congress in 2018, Everytown worked aggressively to help her flip Georgia’s 6th Congressional District, running a $4 million paid communication campaign across digital, mail, TV, radio and phones in addition to email and SMS communication to in-district Everytown members. Everytown Victory Fund ran a similar program for her 2020 reelection campaign, spending $3 million across digital, TV, radio and direct mail. Moms Demand Action and Students Demand Action volunteers made tens of thousands of calls and texts to support Representative McBath and Moms Demand Action founder Shannon Watts held virtual campaign events with her.
Moms Demand Action and Students Demand Action volunteers made over six million voter contacts through phone calls, text messages, door knocks, and more across the country this election cycle to support gun sense candidates up and down the ballot. As part of its efforts this election cycle, Everytown also released polling this fall showing that the vast majority of voters in Georgia support common-sense gun safety laws, including 91% for background checks on all gun sales.
