New York Moms Demand Action, Everytown Respond To Fatal Shooting Of Transgender Woman In Brooklyn

Yahira Nesby is at Least the 22nd Trans Person Killed Nationwide This Year; 17 Have Been Killed with a Gun; Almost All Were Black Women

NEW YORK — The New York chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, part of Everytown for Gun Safety, released the following statement in response to the death of a transgender woman in Brooklyn. According to reports, Yahira was found dead after being shot twice on Thursday evening. 

“We’re heartbroken by news of another shooting in one of our communities, so close to the holidays,” said Allison Peters, a volunteer with the New York chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America. “Our thoughts are with Yahira’s friends and family during this difficult time. We vow to honor her death with action.”

Yahira is one of 22 trans people killed in 2019, almost all of them Black women.
