New Jersey Moms Demand Action, Everytown Applaud Assembly Votes on Gun Violence Prevention Bills, Urge Senate to Act

March 27, 2018

Among Other Things, Bills Would Require Background Checks on All Gun Sales, Create a Red Flag Law, Limit High-Capacity Magazines

TRENTON, N.J. – Today, the New Jersey chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, part of Everytown for Gun Safety, applauded the New Jersey General Assembly for passing bills to help prevent gun violence, and urged the New Jersey Senate to follow suit. These bills include:

  • NJ A2757, which would require background checks for all private gun sales;
  • NJ A2761, which would limit magazine capacity to 10 rounds, lowering the current maximum of 15; and
  • NJ A1217, which would establish a Red Flag Law that allows a court to issue a Gun Violence Restraining Order, which temporarily restricts an individual’s access to firearms when they pose a threat to themselves or others and can help prevent warning signs from turning into tragedies.

STATEMENT FROM BRETT SABO, VOLUNTEER WITH THE NEW JERSEY CHAPTER OF MOMS DEMAND ACTION FOR GUN SENSE IN AMERICA:

“We are proud that New Jersey’s leaders, including Governor Murphy, are taking real action to help prevent gun violence. Common-sense measures like background checks, high-capacity magazine limits and a system to empower families to act on red flags can all help save lives and ensure New Jersey continues to lead the region on gun sense. We hope the Senate acts quickly to pass these common-sense measures that are supported by the people of New Jersey.”
