HB 298 Heads to Senate Next for Committee Assignment
Today, the Montana House Committee passed HB 298, a dangerous piece of legislation that would dismantle the current concealed carry permit system by eliminating all firearm permitting and training requirements. If this bill were to pass the Senate and become law, individuals in Montana would be permitted to carry loaded handguns with no training or permitting whatsoever – including people without any experience handling firearms and individuals who have been convicted of weapons offenses. Additionally, HB 298 would revoke the authority of sheriffs to stop the concealed carry of firearms by people who present dangerous red flags and would compromise law enforcement’s ability to keep us safe on our streets.
In response, the Montana Chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America released the statement below:
“It’s baffling to think that we require 350 hours of training to obtain a manicurist’s license and somehow, our House legislators think that when it comes to carrying hidden, loaded handguns in public, there should be absolutely no training or permitting required,” said Pamela Owen, a volunteer with the Montana chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America. “Legislators in the Senate need to reject this misguided and dangerous attempt by the gun lobby to dismantle Montana’s concealed carry permit system – any attempt to pass this bill into law would put families and communities across the state at risk.”
