JACKSON, MI – A grassroots group of Mid-Michigan moms are urging U.S. Rep. Tim Walberg to support legislation that would expand the gun criminal background check system to include all gun buyers.

According to a recent poll, 87 percent of constituents in the 7th Congressional District favor the background checks for those who are buying from licensed and non-licensed private sellers.

“This poll confirms that most of our neighbors want laws changed to require a background check for all gun sales. Local families will feel safer if Congress passes universal background checks,” Dr. Linda Brundage, a spokeswoman for Mid-Michigan Moms Demand Action For Gun Sense in America, said in a statement.

She said about 40 percent of U.S. gun transfers are conducted at gun shows by unlicensed sellers who are not required to conduct a background check.

The poll was conducted by Schoen LLC for Mayors Against Illegal Guns, a bipartisan coalition of more than 850 U.S. mayors. The data is the first to be released from a survey conducted in more than 60 states and congressional districts.

The poll was conducted between Feb. 15-18 in the 7th Congressional District.

“Congressman Walberg is our representative — it is his duty to support the overwhelming will of the people,” Brundage said.
