At Least Two Transgender People Have Been Shot and Killed This Year; Both Were Black Women
FAIRMOUNT HEIGHTS, Md. — The Maryland chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, part of Everytown for Gun Safety, today responded to reports of the shooting death of a trans woman in Fairmount Heights. Ashanti Carmon was found dead with multiple gunshot wounds on Saturday morning. No arrests have been made.
There have been at least two transgender people killed in the United States so far this year — both of the victims were Black women and both were killed with a gun.
“Today is International Transgender Day of Visibility, but it’s a solemn day for us as we mourn the loss of Ashanti Carmon,” said Danielle Veith, volunteer leader with the Maryland chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America. “We cannot stand for hate in any of our communities, but especially those disproportionately affected by gun violence. We will continue fighting to make sure our transgender neighbors are protected from senseless gun violence.”
