Louisiana Moms Demand Action, Everytown Respond to Shooting That Killed Two at Grambling State University

October 25, 2017

There Have Been at Least 247 School Shootings in the U.S. Since 2013, Including Eight in Louisiana

GRAMBLING, La. – The Louisiana chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, part of Everytown for Gun Safety, released the following statement in response to the fatal shooting of two people at Grambling State University early Wednesday morning. While details are still unfolding, reports indicate that a student and a person visiting the historically black university were fatally shot on campus by a gunman who remains at large. The shooting, which occurred as Grambling State is celebrating homecoming week, started as an altercation inside a door room and spilled out into the campus courtyard. Last month, a separate shooting wounded a student at the university.

According to research by Everytown for Gun Safety, this is at least the 8th school shooting in Louisiana since 2013 and at least the 247th school shooting in the country since 2013.

STATEMENT FROM HENRIETTA TREYZ, VOLUNTEER CHAPTER LEADER FOR THE LOUISIANA CHAPTER OF MOMS DEMAND ACTION FOR GUN SENSE IN AMERICA:

“This morning, Louisianans woke up to the heartbreaking news that two young people were senselessly killed at Grambling State University. The families, who will forever have an empty seat at the table, are in my prayers. While we mourn these deaths, we must remember that gun violence is preventable, and we can do more to avoid these tragedies. Americans should be able to do things like attend homecoming celebrations and go to the movies or to a concert without the constant threat of gun violence. Once again, I’m reminded that we must continue to advocate for common-sense gun violence prevention policies, and push back on gun-lobby backed proposals that would weaken gun laws in our state.”
