May 1, 2017

TOPEKA, Kan. – The Kansas chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, part of Everytown for Gun Safety, released the following statement after a gunman apparently killed three people Sunday and injured another before taking his own life.

Early reports indicate that four people are dead and another is injured after a shooting Sunday afternoon at a southwest Topeka residence where in-home care was provided for individuals with special needs. A 29-year-old man, a 64-year-old man, and a 20-year-old man were killed, along with a 25-year-old man believed to be the shooter, according to the Topeka Police Department. The surviving victim was taken to the hospital with injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening.

Across the country, more than 90 people are killed each day with guns and hundreds more are injured, on average.

STATEMENT FROM TONYA BOYD, VOLUNTEER WITH THE KANSAS CHAPTER OF MOMS DEMAND ACTION FOR GUN SENSE IN AMERICA AND A MEMBER OF THE EVERYTOWN SURVIVOR NETWORK:

“Our thoughts this morning are with the families affected by this tragic shooting. As someone who knows the toll of gun violence personally, my heart hurts every time there is a shooting here. Kansans are tired of gun violence, and we need our leaders to take real action to address it. We can – and we must – do more to prevent this kind of senseless tragedy.”
