Robert Godwin Sr., a Father of Nine and Grandfather of 14, Was Targeted at Random on Easter Sunday; Video of His Murder Was Posted Online

CLEVELAND – The Ohio chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, a part of Everytown for Gun Safety, today released the following statement in response to the Easter Sunday murder of Robert Godwin Sr., a 74-year-old father of nine and grandfather of 14, that his shooter videotaped and posted to Facebook. The man who shot and killed Godwin is still at large.

Also Sunday, a shooting at a Columbus nightclub left nine people injured.

STATEMENT FROM MOLLY CROWE, CLEVELAND-BASED VOLUNTEER WITH THE OHIO CHAPTER OF MOMS DEMAND ACTION FOR GUN SENSE IN AMERICA:

“My heart aches for Robert Godwin’s family and friends, who are suffering a grief that no one should have to endure. The fact that his killing was made public on the internet is a grisly injustice, but it is also symptomatic of the fact that 93 Americans are shot and killed every day – and hundreds more are injured.

“There has been far too much bloodshed in Cleveland in incidents that never make the news. Too many Ohioans live with the threat and reality of gun violence, and we must refuse to accept this as the new normal. It should not take a videotaped murder of a grandfather to open Ohioans’ and Americans’ eyes to the facts of gun violence in our country. Moms Demand Action volunteers in Ohio and across the country will continue fighting for laws and policies that make us all safer from gun violence.”
