TV Ad (Viewable Here) Quotes Deal’s 2016 Veto Statement on Guns on Campus and Urges Him Not to Sign Away His Legacy by Going Against His Own Words
ATLANTA – Everytown for Gun Safety Action Fund and the Georgia chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, a part of Everytown for Gun Safety, today released a new television ad urging Governor Deal to veto HB 280, the dangerous guns on campus legislation currently on his desk. The ad will launch on television Wednesday. It asks Governor Deal to stand by what he said last year – that to allow guns on campus “should require overwhelming justification,” and makes the case that, just like last year, that justification does not exist. “This is still a dangerous bill and just like last year, it has failed to earn the support of university faculty or student government organizations in our state,” said Lindsey Donovan, volunteer leader of the Georgia chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America. “The Governor’s words matter. This ad is part of a huge effort to make sure that the Governor hears that his constituents support his veto – Georgians overwhelmingly don’t want guns on campus and research proves that proposals like this one would make our campuses less safe. I encourage everyone to keep calling the Governor and showing up to mobilize against guns on campus. Our children deserve better than this.”
Last Sunday during the Masters, Everytown and the Georgia chapter of Moms Demand Action launched a full-page ad in the Augusta Chronicle asking the Governor to veto guns on campus. The ad will run again in the Atlanta Journal Constitution on Thursday. Throughout the week, Moms Demand Action volunteers, faculty, students and concerned Georgians will be attending rallies and contacting Governor Deal to ask him to stand by his words from the last legislative session and again veto a dangerous guns on campus bill.
