Everytown, Virginia Moms Demand Action Applaud Defeat of Legislation That Would Have Allowed Untrained, Unlicensed People to Carry Hidden, Loaded Guns In Public

March 3, 2017

Gun Safety Advocates Now Focused on Defeating Similar “Concealed Carry Reciprocity” Bill Introduced in Congress

RICHMOND, Va. – The Virginia chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, part of Everytown for Gun Safety, marked the recent end of Virginia’s state legislative session by applauding the defeat of Senate Bill 1440 and House Bill 2265, legislation that would have allowed people to carry hidden, loaded weapons in public without a permit.

As the Virginia legislature was adjourning, Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) introduced new legislation in Congress on Monday that would undermine our nation’s gun laws and radically redefine who can carry hidden, loaded guns anywhere in America by forcing states to recognize concealed carry permits from every other state, many with significantly lower standards.

The Virginia chapter of Moms Demand Action plans to fight this dangerous legislation in Congress.

STATEMENT FROM JENNIFER HERRERA, VOLUNTEER WITH THE VIRGINIA CHAPTER OF MOMS DEMAND ACTION FOR GUN SENSE IN AMERICA:

“The defeat of Senate Bill 1440 and House Bill 2265 offers bipartisan proof that voters don’t want reckless policies that would gut our public safety laws by allowing people with no permit and no safety training to carry hidden, loaded guns in our communities. This legislative session, my fellow Virginia Moms Demand Action volunteers made their voices heard in opposition to this legislation by calling and visiting our legislators at the State Capitol. While we applaud this win for public safety in our state, the fight is not over. In fact, legislation that would upend existing state gun laws and undermine public safety laws from coast to coast was just introduced in Congress. Our leaders in Virginia and those we sent to Washington to represent us should remember they were elected to represent our best interests and should join our call to oppose this dangerous gun lobby priority. They can be sure they’ll be hearing from us – the safety of our families and communities is on the line.”
