Mass Shooting in Las Vegas Has Prompted Widespread Outcry to Prohibit Dangerous Gun Accessories that Make it Easy to Mimic Machine Gun Fire
WASHINGTON – Days after the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history in Las Vegas, Everytown for Gun Safety and Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, a part of Everytown, released the following statements on Congressional efforts to prohibit bump stocks.
After a gunman shot and killed 58 people, and injured hundreds more, at a concert in Las Vegas, law enforcement officials have revealed that the gunman used “bump stocks” — accessories that harness the recoil of a semiautomatic gun to make it fire like an automatic weapon — to quickly kill more people during the mass shooting.
STATEMENT FROM JOHN FEINBLATT, PRESIDENT OF EVERYTOWN FOR GUN SAFETY:
“Congress should take action immediately to prohibit bump stocks and other conversion devices that end-run federal law by turning rifles into machine guns. This alone, however, will not solve our country’s gun violence problem. Lawmakers must also do more to prevent further bloodshed by rejecting the gun lobby’s dangerous legislation to weaken silencer safety laws, and proposals like ‘Concealed Carry Reciprocity’ that would gut state gun laws. Congress has a duty to protect American lives.”
STATEMENT FROM SHANNON WATTS, FOUNDER OF MOMS DEMAND ACTION FOR GUN SENSE IN AMERICA:
“Of course bump stocks should be prohibited, but if that’s the only action we take after 58 Americans are shot and killed and hundreds more injured, we should be ashamed of ourselves. I’m glad Congress is willing to consider bump stock legislation now, but just last week lawmakers were fighting to roll back gun silencer safety laws and gut our nation’s concealed carry system. We’ll work with legislators interested in prohibiting bump stocks, but we’ll also demand other laws to help save American lives. Now is the time to demand that lawmakers prioritize people over gun manufacturers’ profits.”
