Everytown, Indiana Moms Demand Action, Gary Chief of Police Larry Mckinley Criticize Introduction of NRA-Backed Legislation Forcing States to Allow Concealed Carry by Dangerous People

March 3, 2017

Senator Todd Young Cosponsored Texas Senator Cornyn’s ‘Concealed Carry Reciprocity’ Bill That Would Gut Gun Laws and Make The Weakest Link the Law of the Land

WASHINGTON – The Indiana chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, part of Everytown for Gun Safety, and Gary Chief of Police Larry McKinley released the following statements today in response to Monday’s introduction of new legislation by Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) that would undermine our nation’s gun laws and radically redefine who can carry hidden, loaded guns anywhere in America by forcing states to recognize concealed carry permits from every other state, many with significantly lower standards.

Senator Todd Young is a cosponsor of the legislation.

STATEMENT FROM CRYSTAL PASCHAL, VOLUNTEER WITH THE INDIANA CHAPTER OF MOMS DEMAND ACTION FOR GUN SENSE IN AMERICA:

“Senator Young is sending a clear message that gun lobby priorities outweigh the public safety of our communities. This dangerous legislation would gut our nation’s gun laws and make the weakest link the law of the land. Our leaders can expect to hear from me and my fellow Hoosiers about this dangerous gun lobby-backed legislation because the public safety of our communities is on the line.”

STATEMENT FROM GARY CHIEF OF POLICE LARRY MCKINLEY:

“Indiana law enforcement officers respect the rich history of responsible gun ownership in our state, but this gun lobby-backed bill guts America’s public safety laws and puts us all at risk. Hoosiers have a right to feel safe in our cities and towns, which is why I reject this proposal that clearly undermines public safety and puts our communities at risk.”

STATEMENT FROM JOHN FEINBLATT, PRESIDENT OF EVERYTOWN FOR GUN SAFETY:

“Senator Cornyn’s bill is a dream for the gun lobby and a nightmare for public safety. For centuries, cities and states have set their own reasonable, tailored limits on who can carry hidden, loaded guns in their public spaces. One size does not fit all, and this NRA-backed bill would only make the weakest link the law of the land – gutting America’s public safety laws.”

STATEMENT FROM SHANNON WATTS, FOUNDER OF MOMS DEMAND ACTION FOR GUN SENSE IN AMERICA, PART OF EVERYTOWN FOR GUN SAFETY:

“This radical legislation, created and promoted by gun lobbyists, would upend existing state gun laws and undermine public safety laws from coast to coast. It would also go against the will of the majority of Americans – 88 percent of whom support requiring safety training and a clean criminal record in order to carry a hidden, loaded handgun in public. Moms Demand Action volunteers and gun violence survivors in all 50 states will band together with police, mayors and lawmakers to fight this dangerous legislation. The safety of our families and communities are on the line.”
