Bloomberg Spoke at Everytown’s Presidential Gun Sense Forum in Iowa in August and This Week Received the Presidential Moms Demand Action Gun Sense Candidate Distinction

Gun Safety is a Defining Issue of 2020 Presidential Campaigns

NEW YORK – Everytown for Gun Safety Action Fund and Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, a part of Everytown, released the following statements today in response to plans from former Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg to combat gun violence if elected president. Mayor Bloomberg was a co-founder of Everytown for Gun Safety.

“Given the significant progress we’ve made in the past six years working together, it’s no surprise Mayor Bloomberg has put forward a bold and comprehensive agenda to address a gun violence crisis that claims 100 lives every day in America and wounds hundreds more,” said Shannon Watts, founder of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America. “This is an extraordinary moment as presidential candidates are vying to be the biggest and boldest on the issue of gun safety, in stark contrast to past cycles, where candidates frequently hid. After Mayor Bloomberg’s many years of working to end gun violence, it makes sense that he is now centering his campaign on this life or death issue.”

The 2020 presidential cycle has been notable for the number of candidates proudly embracing gun safety as an issue to run and win on. In August, 16 presidential candidates and Mayor Bloomberg addressed Everytown for Gun Safety Action Fund’s Presidential Gun Sense Forum in Des Moines, Iowa. About 700 members of the Everytown for Gun Safety Action Fund, including members of Moms Demand Action, Students Demand Action and the Everytown Survivor Network, joined the forum. Bloomberg has also been awarded the Moms Demand Action Gun Sense Candidate distinction.

Moms Demand Action and Students Demand Action volunteers are continuing to attend events and candidate forums to elevate the issue of gun safety around the country — and will continue to do so until the 2020 election.
