February 16, 2018

“Throw Them Out” Will Empower Voters to Find Out Where Candidates Stand on Gun Safety and Pledge to Vote on the Issue

With 262 Days Until Election Day, New Action Plan Found Here: https://everytown.org/throwthemout/

NEW YORK – Everytown for Gun Safety and Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, a part of Everytown, today launched a five-action plan to funnel the anger and heartbreak Americans feel over the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, into an actionable plan to elect leaders who will fight for gun safety and work to put an end to these horrifying and all-too-frequent gun tragedies.

“It’s time to throw them out,” said John Feinblatt, president of Everytown for Gun Safety. “Lawmakers have had enough time to come around to common sense on the gun issue. Americans have had it with excuses and inaction — it’s time to elect leaders who will finally act to save lives from gun violence.”

The five-action plan is as follows:

1. Commit to Vote on Gun Safety
Take the pledge to vote on gun safety.

2. Follow the NRA Money
Find out how much money your leaders have taken from the NRA and call them to say that this will be a deciding factor for you on Election Day.

3. Register Your Friends to Vote
Get registered to vote and make sure your friends are too.

4. Get Candidates on the Record
Attend a Moms Demand Action meeting to learn about the Gun Sense Candidate questionnaire we will use to hold our leaders accountable on Election Day.

5. Run for Office
Learn how to become a gun sense champion in your community.

And after we rally, we vote. Volunteers with Everytown and Moms Demand Action will ask candidates for elected office to fill out a gun safety questionnaire: It should be no secret how candidates will vote on this issue if elected. Those joining the gun safety moment in the days following Parkland will be asked to reach out to candidates and elected officials, as well as to sign a pledge, committing to vote on the issue of gun safety. In turn, Everytown and Moms Demand Action will send voters who have signed the pledge guidance on gun safety candidates in their area before Election Day.

“Americans need to know that we are not helpless,” said Shannon Watts, founder of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America. “It’s true that many of our lawmakers have failed us, but that’s why we have elections. In November, we will fight to throw out every lawmaker unwilling to stand up for public safety, and if candidates won’t stand up to the gun lobby, we will run ourselves. Our children deserve better.”
