Volunteers with Illinois Moms Demand Action Presented Rep. Brad Schneider With Hundreds of Postcards from Constituents Urging Congress To Oppose “Concealed Carry Reciprocity” and Thanked Him For His Leadership
LINCOLNSHIRE, IL – Today, volunteers with the Illinois chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, a part of Everytown for Gun Safety, visited the Lincolnshire district office of Rep. Brad Schneider (D-IL) to present him with hundreds of postcards from his constituents, urging Congress to stop dangerous NRA-supported “Concealed Carry Reciprocity,” which Rep. Schneider has opposed. The volunteers thanked Rep. Schneider for being a gun sense champion, and together they discussed how the gun lobby-backed policy proposal would gut Illinois’ gun laws and make Illinois residents less safe.
“It’s time for Congress to act to improve the safety of our communities and reduce senseless gun violence,” said Rep. Brad Schneider. “So-called ‘Concealed Carry Reciprocity’ undermines American gun laws by forcing states to accept the concealed carry permitting standards of every other state, even if another state has no standards at all. My constituents want commonsense gun safety standards to protect our communities, not a race-to-the-bottom policy that puts more of our neighbors at risk.”
“We’re outraged by the gun violence crisis taking so many lives here in Illinois and across the country” said Caryn Fliegler, volunteer with the Illinois chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America. “The last thing Congress should do is make things worse by passing dangerous legislation like ‘Concealed Carry Reciprocity.’ We’re grateful to Rep. Schneider for taking a strong stand against this dangerous bill and for his work to prevent gun violence in our district and country.”
“Concealed Carry Reciprocity,” the NRA’s longtime top policy priority, does not create a national standard for who can carry guns in public across our country. To the contrary, it would gut each state’s gun laws and make Illinois residents less safe by forcing Illinois to accept the concealed carry permitting standards of every other state, even if that state has much weaker or no standards at all. It would effectively turn the weakest state’s laws into nationwide laws, making the weakest link the law of the land.
