House Bill 206 Will Prohibit Gun Possession by People Convicted of Assault Against an Intimate Partner and People Subject to a Domestic Violence Protective Order
SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, part of Everytown for Gun Safety, today applauded Governor Herbert for signing House Bill 206, legislation that will prohibit possession of a firearm by those convicted of assault against an intimate partner and those subject to a domestic violence protective order. Sponsored by Rep. Brian King and Sen. Deidre Henderson, HB 206 received a strong endorsement from the Utah Domestic Violence Coalition and passed out of the legislature with bipartisan support.

“I’m thrilled by the news that Governor Herbert last night signed HB 206 into law – a bill that will make a real difference in the lives of many women in Utah. The reality is that the U.S. is the most dangerous country in the developed world when it comes to gun violence against women, and the presence of a gun makes it five times more likely domestic violence will turn deadly. HB 206 addresses this head-on by identifying domestic abusers and prohibiting them from purchasing guns. I’m proud of Rep. King for his leadership on this issue and our elected officials for coming together and giving this bill bipartisan support. I hope we can do more in the future to prevent gun violence in our state.”
