TSU Shooting is the Second Campus Shooting Today, Third Shooting at TSU in Three Months

HOUSTON— In response to reports of today’s shooting at Texas Southern University in Houston in which a gunman fatally shot one person and injured another on campus, the Texas chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, a part of Everytown for Gun Safety, released the following statement. This is the third school shooting at TSU in three months and the second school shooting today.

Today’s shooting comes on the heels of a shooting at Northern Arizona University’s Flagstaff campus early this morning in which a freshman fatally shot one person and injured three others.

Just this week, Everytown for Gun Safety released a new interactive school shootings index that maps each school shooting since 2013.

STATEMENT FROM ALEXANDRA CHASSE, UNIVERSITY INSTRUCTOR, GUN OWNER AND VOLUNTEER WITH THE TEXAS CHAPTER OF MOMS DEMAND ACTION FOR GUN SENSE IN AMERICA:

“My thoughts and prayers are with the Texas Southern University community today. As a mother and instructor at another Houston university, it’s heartbreaking for me to think that the students at TSU have experienced three shootings in just three months. While the details of today’s shooting are still unfolding, what’s clear is that our students shouldn’t live in fear when they’re in their dorms, in their classes or walking around their campuses. We can barely make it a week in this country without news of yet another school shooting and today we barely made it twelve hours. I’m a gun owner and like the vast majority of gun owners, I know that with rights comes great responsibility. That’s why I know that after our prayers, we must take action and do more to reduce gun violence in our state and across the country.”
