Washington State School Shooting is the 87th Since Newtown; See Full List Here

In response to the tragedy at Marysville-Pilchuck High School in Marysville, Washington today in which multiple students were shot and two students, including the shooter, are reportedly dead, Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America released the below statements. Everytown for Gun Safety, of which Moms Demand Action is a part, has been keeping track of instances in which a gun is discharged at American schools since the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School and today’s shooting in Washington State is the 87th since Newtown. The full list is available here.

STATEMENT FROM SHANNON WATTS, FOUNDER OF MOMS DEMAND ACTION FOR GUN SENSE IN AMERICA:

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to those affected by the shooting today in Marysville, Washington. Americans are tired of watching news helicopter footage of our children being led out of their schools – a place where they should be safe from the gun violence that kills 86 Americans every day. After the tragedy at Sandy Hook, we started counting shootings in American schools and today’s is the 87th —three of which have occurred in Washington. Our children and teachers should not be the frontline of America’s gun violence. This is unacceptable. We need to do everything we can—and demand our leaders do the same—to prevent the next tragedy.”

STATEMENT FROM LEAH BERNSTEIN, MEMBER, MOMS DEMAND ACTION –WASHINGTON:

“As a mother with kids in school just miles down the road from Marysville, my heart is broken for the students and faculty of Marysville-Pilchuk High School, and for the entire community. When we send our kids to school each day, we shouldn’t have to worry about whether the next shooting will be at their school. As mothers committed to reducing gun violence, all of our thoughts and prayers are with these children and their families in the wake of this awful tragedy.”

Washington State voters are currently considering Initiative 594, a proposal to require background checks on all gun sales, the only up-or-down vote on guns this election season. To learn more about I-594, please visit www.wagunresponsibility.org
