After the mass shooting tragedies in Newtown and Aurora, legislators boldly passed landmark gun safety legislation, including background checks and magazine capacity limits, in order to protect the children and communities of Colorado.
Two of the leaders of that effort – state Senators John Morse and Angela Giron – are now the targets of the first-ever recall elections in Colorado. The recall elections, which are costing taxpayers tens of thousands of dollars, are being lead by the National Rifle Association (NRA) and other gun lobby organizations.
“The NRA was unwilling to wait until the next election to try and remove these two legislators from office as punishment for supporting common-sense gun reform legislation, despite Sen. Morse’s plans to retire after this term,” said Aimee Tavares, National Field Director of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America. “Colorado members of Moms Demand Action are supporting these courageous leaders, and we want all American lawmakers know that moms will always stand with the people who stand for the safety of our families.”
Moms Demand Action believes the outcome of these recall elections will impact not just Colorado, but every state in the country.
“If the NRA succeeds in Colorado with this recall, legislators everywhere will give pause before voting for common-sense gun laws. Ultimately, it will be all American families who pay the price with their safety if the NRA wins these elections,” said Tavares.
