Muskegon Heights High School Shooting is Sixth School Shooting in 2016; 166th School Shooting Since 2013
LANSING, Mich.— The Michigan chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, part of Everytown for Gun Safety, today responded to recent reports of a school shooting at Muskegon Heights High School on Tuesday night in which a 21-year old gunman shot and injured three people with a handgun after being denied entrance to the high school basketball game. Everytown and Moms Demand Action have kept an index of school shootings in America since 2013. This is the sixth school shooting in 2016 and the 166th school shooting since 2013.
According to media reports, the shooter was prohibited from possessing a firearm—in 2014, he was convicted of felony carrying of a concealed weapon, and in 2015 he was convicted of felony possession of a controlled substance.

“Our thoughts are with the students, faculty and families affected by the shooting at Muskegon Heights High School. Although details are still unfolding, we know that this is at least the 166th school shooting since 2013—and the sixth in 2016 alone. And while no one law can prevent every episode of gun violence, we know there is more we can do to keep guns from getting into the hands of people who should not have them and to keep guns out of our Michigan Schools. As a teacher and mother, I will do everything I can to prevent tragedies like what happened Tuesday from happening again. We must demand our Michigan lawmakers and our leaders in Congress act to reduce gun violence.”
