Caledonia, Mich. — The Michigan chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, part of Everytown for Gun Safety, today responded to reports of a shooting in a Davenport University residence hall on Sunday morning. According to the school’s public safety department, during a fight between four non-students and two students inside a dorm room, an unidentified person fired shots at a wall. One shot went through the wall and struck a sleeping student in the room next door in the hand. The student was treated for non-life threatening injuries.

STATEMENT FROM EMILY DURBIN, VOLUNTEER CHAPTER LEADER WITH THE MICHIGAN CHAPTER, MOMS DEMAND ACTION FOR GUN SENSE IN AMERICA:

“This weekend, the Davenport University community experienced the awful reality that is the barrage of calls and texts that come when a campus is suddenly in the midst of a shooting. Students should be able to sleep in their dorms without the fear of being woken up by gunfire – or even worse, being shot. We simply cannot allow this to become the new normal. Our Michigan students deserve better.

“I hope campus leaders and Michigan residents see this terrifying shooting as a reminder that we have to do more to keep guns off our college campuses. We need to work together to reduce gun violence, and I encourage all Michigan voters to vote for candidates who will do the same.”
